Freight brokerages contract for seventh straight month

Updated stats show freight brokerages contracted again for the 7th straight month. 7.8% fewer brokerages than a year ago to be exact. 28,438 active freight brokerage authorities is roughly the same total as 2 years ago, and still 21% more than there were in the January 2021 records.

freight brokerages contracted again for the 7th straight month. 7.8% fewer brokerages than a year ago to be exact.

With declines of -7.4%, -6.1%, and now -7.8% over the past three months the trend is firmly in place as we head into month 22 of this freight recession. As a reminder four years ago before the pandemic there were only 21,229 which is a net increase of 33%.

These are net numbers at the end of the day and do not reflect the really crazy stats of freight brokerage growth. As we previously noted here, there were 25,000 new authorities activated in two short years from Jan 2020 to Dec 2022, with only 9,700 of those still active.

Where will active brokerage authorities be at the end of 2024? I guess it depends on what happens in the freight market.
