25,000 new freight brokerages were created over three years

From Jan 2020 to Dec 2022 – 25,291 new freight brokerage authorities were granted, of which 9,794 are still active.

While there are 10k more freight brokerages operating today than in December 2019, 25k new brokerages popped into existence during this time. Almost 2 out of every 3 have already shut down.

While there are 10k more freight brokerages operating today than in December 2019, 25k new brokerages popped into existence during this time. Almost 2 out of every 3 have already shut down.

You can see the rapid expansion and contraction in the average days from granted to revoked authorities. The average lifespan has halved since 2020, from 559 days to 280 days, while median lifespan days has dropped 18%.

So, while 10k net new brokerages still have active authorities compared to 2019, there were actually 2.5x that number of new brokerages flooding into the market during the pandemic!

How many were double brokers? Still trying to answer to that question.
