Snapshot of credit profiles for the largest freight brokerages

It’s been a rough 27 months for freight brokerages during this freight recession. Some might say depression.

Capacity is loose. Rates are stagnant. And freight brokerages have not been immune to financial implosion during this down cycle.

With that said the overall picture of credit scores for the largest 1,650 freight brokerages are not as bad as one might imagine.

According to financial and credit data covering the largest 1,650 freight brokerages roughly 10% are in the highest risk credit category, which is 1 to 33 on our credit index.

In total, almost half, 46%, fall into the highest credit rating category.

Surprisingly enough Micro-Cap ($1m to $9.9m in annual revenue) and Growth-Cap ($10m to $49m in annual revenue) freight brokerages have the lowest numbers in the lowest risk category with only 6% and 8% respectively.

On the other hand cash flow constraints and extended payment terms for Mid-Cap ($50m to $99m in annual revenue) and Large-Cap ($100m to $999m in annual revenue) freight brokerages are challenging. Both categories have lower credit scores overall then their smaller peers.

Almost 30% of Large-Cap freight brokerages have credit scores in the lower third, while 18% of Mid-Cap brokerages credit scores are located in the red.

This isn’t to say these freight brokerages are at risk of failing. Though the lower the credit score suggests there is more leverage risks and exteneded financial terms for customers.
