Another month, another 188 freight brokerages that no longer have authorities..This is the 19th straight month of year over year declines. As of August 31 there are now 26,216 active freight brokerages registered with the FMCSA.
Plugging in a growth trend of roughly 6% annually since 2017 would yield 1,850 more freight brokerages than we have active now. The big bounce that we all witnessed has now regressed to 7.1% fewer brokerages than this long term trend line.
As always thanks to Kathy Sardelli and Mark Draeb at Carrier Details LLC for sending over this data.

The streak of positive monthly growth in freight brokerage authorities was 31 months before the current downturn. Months of shallow negative numbers were few and far between leading up to the current downturn in November of 2022. In fact, there were only three down months in the prior 71 months pre Nov 2022.
It seems as though a bottom has been reached in monthly closures. It will likely take another 8 to 12 months to see consecutive positive growth numbers though. Much like the broader freight markets, while we might be at a bottom, reasons for a bounce right now are few and far between.
