3,200 fewer freight brokerages than in May 2023

Freight brokerages closures slightly accelerated YoY in April, inching up to -10.8% year-over-year compared to -10.6% last month. There are now 27,206 active freight brokerages compared to 30,406 at this time last year.

Whether it’s a bloodbath or not is up to your own personal opinion. Alex Lockie from Overdrive published an awesome article this week comparing closures on both the carrier and broker side. You can find the article here.

Compared to four years ago when the pandemic began there are still 27% more freight brokerages with active authorities. When looking back four years from May 2023 though this comparison was 48% more brokerages were active in May 2023 then in May 2019.

Here are the running % changes:

MoM:        (-0.9%)
6-month:   (-6.0%)
12-Month: (-10.8%)
2-year:       (-8.9%)
3-year:        7.6%
4-year:         27%
5-year:         32.1%

Thanks as always to the amazing team over at Carrier Details LLC, Kathy Sardelli and Mark Draeb for sharing the data with me.
