Freight brokers control 1 in 4 truckloads

From at least 2015 to 2019 freight brokers control of for-hire trucking hovered around 15% based on gross revenue estimates for trucking (ATA) and brokerage (Armstrong & Associates).

2020 moved the needle though as the percentage of freight moved by brokers jumped to 25% by 2022.

Trucking and brokerage revenues most likely took a significant hit in 2023. By our estimates it could as much as 15% to 20% lower. It will be interesting to see if freight brokerage market share will hold or if we will see a dip as freight markets cooled.

In any case, the long-term trend for freight brokers to continue to grow market share remains bullish.
