2024 starts with 8.4% of freight brokerage closing up shop

The trend of freight brokerages closing continues into 2024. The latest counts from the FMCSA shows an 8.4% year over year decline in active freight brokerage authorities. 

The last few months have shown a steepening decline in active freight brokerages. 

YoY growth in freight brokerages turned negative in July 2023 (-0.9%) and has continued to accelerate over the past few months. Since October 2023 YoY declines have been brisk Oct 2023 (-7.4%), Nov (-6.1%), Dec (-7.8%), and Jan (-8.6%). 

January 2024 was also the first month to show a negative trend in 2-year growth in freight brokerages. There are now 2.3% fewer freight brokerages than in January 2022. Compared to January 2021 though there are still 17.3% more freight brokerages than were up and running 3 years ago in January 2021.
